HOW WE TAUGHT THEM TO READ...

Many parents ask how a homeschooling parent can teach their child to read. The answers are plentiful.
I have developed a system in our home. The outline is pretty simple so I'll just post it here. :-)

1. At around 2 years of age we buy the Leap Frog Letter Factory DVD.
By the time the kids have watched it for a few weeks they know their letters and sounds.
You'll be sick of the movie but they soak it up like a sponge. :-)

Note: They stopped watching this after a while. We carry the lesson into daily life by pointing to letters in signs on buildings..like at the bank or grocery store. If they forget a few letters they quickly remember when we pop the video back in at around 3 1/2 years of age. Brisan remember all his letters and sounds again in a jiffy and loved the Nostalgia that he felt as he recognized the movie. LOL
True! "MOM I remember that!"

2. At about 3 1/2 years of age we introduce them to www.starfall.com
It is wonderful, keeps them entertained and is a fun way to learn.

3. At around 4 1/2 we begin using the Dolch Flash cards. I used to make them by printing them from this site, pasting the pages to construction paper and then cutting them out to make the cards. They were flimsy so I broke down and bought them from Super Duper Publications.

4. Bob Books from our local library are fun for kids and then early reading books help them take off on their reading adventure.

The flash cards were a must for us to help them have a nice, firm basis for reading.

That's what we did! :-)
